Freddie Spencer school

I took the three day school at Freddie Spencer's last year and since December 2008, the school is no longer there...Honda came and took away all the bikes, Freddie's wife reportedly drove him into a huge financial stoppie.

Anyone would like to share their experience with any similar schools, please post. Freddie's school was apparently the best by several accounts and I agree.

When Honda pulled out of Spencer's, they switched their support to the Kevin Schwantz school, now at Barber. Wife and I just attended the two day class there and it was great! Awesome track, very technical. Instructors were very student-focused and couldn't have been more helpful. Kevin was there for the class and took part teaching as well. Extra bennies included hosted dinner the first night inside the Barber museum, after which we got the behind the scenes tour of the museum workshops. Very cool...We'll be posting pics from the school and track as soon as we get them from the school photographer (part of the class benefits). If you haven't been, its worth every penny!

Anyone want to know more, let me know!

I was hanging out and riding with Freddie yesterday. ;-) All I can say is "SICK!" His motorcycle doesn't move! You cannot tell when he's on the brakes or throttle because his bike isn't pitching around even a little. Appeared to be a genuinely nice guy who is down on his luck. No matter what his personal situation is, one thing is for sure. He's a world champion and he's still got it. Completely rewrote my line around NJMP. Can't wait for the next time.

Which brings me to my main point. If anyone is looking for a Freddie Spencer class you can still get one through Teampromotion. http://www.teampromotion.com/tpm.php

Freddie has been contracted to teach classes for the club. He will be at VIR August 1, 2, & 3. He will be back at NJMP on August 28 & 29 I believe. If you are interested in attending a school like Freddie Spencer, this is a great opportunity. To be blunt you can take advantage of the man being a little down on his luck. Where you could have spend several thousand dollars on his official school, you can now spend a fraction of that and get 100% of your training from Freddie himself. He was in the classroom with the students yesterday. He took them out on the track personally.

It's not the Freddie Spencer School. It's not like a full school at all. It's part of a track day event. It's an opportunity to get some great training from a legend at a much reduced price. That said, it's not cheap. But it's not $2000 either. I'm going to estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000-$1200. And the classroom sizes will be modest.

I have an interest in going to a "school" like that; however, all the schools/training I looked at are located in CA. Since I like CA (and wouldn't mind going out there for the weekend or so), can some one point me in the right direction as to which schools are good and if they offer their own bikes to learn on? Also, what is the typical setup (i.e., what does the training consist of -- classes & track -- and how long does it all take)?

Thanks!

The 2 day school is $1500. That's if you bring your own bike. Bike rental for the 2 days (either a new CBR60RR or a GSXR600, your choice, and they encourage to try both while you're there) is an additional $300. If you bring your own riding gear (full face helmet, one or two piece leathers, etc), then there is no additional cost. Otherwise they provide the gear for rental as well. They provide hot, catered lunches both days, as well as the hosted dinner at the museum the first night. There are lots of snacks for breakfast, healthy and otherwise, so really breakfast is taken care of as well. They continually pump fluids into you on a hot day, with energy drinks, water and some Red Bull to take care of the afternoon slump. Some affiliations will get you a discount (We're also HRCA members, so that got us a 5% discount off the total).

There are lots of little things that makes the school nice as well. The classroom sesssions are held in the large, race control room of the main race building. Nice cold a/c when you come off a hot track in your leathers. They've got a 600RR and a GXSR600 in the classroom for technical discussions. The track bikes are parked directly below, under an overhang of the building that keeps them shaded and/or out of the rain. They also have a bike mounted on a stand there, with a simulated corner lean so the instructors can work on your riding position with you (Ask me how I know...!)

They have a school photographer on hand throughout the two days, taking video and stills of each student. They also have a track video bike ridden by an instructor that videos you while you're on the track. They use the videos during the classroom session so you can see what you're doing and how to improve. About 2-3 weeks after the course, you get a CD with pics and video of you on the track and at the school. Very cool. We should be getting our CDs this week, so I'll post some pics once they arrive.

They really do cater to the students and it was well worth every penny. We haven't been to the other schools, but I can't imagine anyone doing better than the folks at Schwantz did at putting on a roadracing school program. Definitely a 5-star rating!

Oh, and its Alabama, so it won't be getting cooler until September. I wouldn't worry about the temp, though. You don't notice it out on the track (and it was mid-90s and sunny both days we were there). The only time you realize you're baking is when you pull back onto pit road and slow down. :-)

i attended the freddie spencer school back in 2004. the 2-up ride on his vfr was amazing. soooo smooth with the throttle and brakes.

i didn't see any info regarding his classes on the website, but might be interested in the njmp dates.
