One explanation might be laziness, like people who ask others to do their homework for them. Or stupidity, like asking strangers who could just lie and make up anything as a practical joke that he'd then just blindly hand in without thinking, unable as he seems to be to think for himself to begin with (as evidenced by the need to ask others to do any creative or thought-provoking work for him).
