fraction question? (pre algebra)?

to get 20 on the bottom, you took 4 X 5 so you have to multiply the top by the same as the bottom. So in 1/4 is not 5/20 and 3/5 is not 15/20. so you question 1/4 - 3/5 is now 5/20 -15/20

this is very sad, but i forgot how to change the top number of a fraction once i change the bottom number example:
1/4 - 3/5

so i could change the bottom number to 20 so that way both the bottom numbers are the same and i can subtract but i forgot to how to change the top number, its review and i did this super long ago help?
