Forum FAQ Sticky.

Okay here's the plan. One sticky, containing answers to all the FAQ's in this forum. It would be constantly stuck at the top of the forum, and locked to prevent replies. Questions based on FAQ answers, would be asked by posting a thread, instead of replying the sticky itself.

The idea is to eliminate hassle caused by the reasking of questions that have been exhaustively answered already. If someone were to re-ask a question, we would just point them to the FAQ with a (friendly) READ THE FAQ!

The Poll here, is to gauge the reaction from you guys. If we get an outright "No, I don't want that!" then we'll scrap the idea. But I hope that you'll all agree with the idea, and help us by suggesting things to go in the FAQ, and providing quality answers to FAQs in your areas of expertise.

As for what goes in the FAQ, it's ultimately up to you. Really, anything that is frequently asked! For example: reviews with comments on the Tungsten models, recommended software, problem solving, bluetooth setup, video encoding etc etc.

I suggest that the FAQ itself will not contain the answers, but links to the answers, so it does not become cluttered. If the idea goes ahead, I will create some web pages to hold the answers. Then each FAQ on the sticky would have a link to it's own answer. I would also link back from the web pages to any relevant discussions on the subject in hand, for further reference.

A similar thing was set up a while back in the IQue forum and appears to have been a sucess. I hope you both like the idea, and contribute your expertise and ideas to the "project".
Matthew and I shall be co-ordinating/creating this together, so please contact us with any specific questions/worrys.

Otherwise just post away here with your ideas, offers of contributions (in terms of written answers to FAQs) and any other questions. And, of course, vote. :)

I'm all for it but we've all started somewhere on our "Palm Quest" and I know I've learned a lot on here by asking DUMB questions.

The problem is there are often SHADES of questions:

"Yeah, I know that, but I'm using this other thing as well . . . . ."

Which really require a posting to get an exact answer regarding a "minor effect" of a program or a very, very specific conduit question or a mishap with one type of OS/application combo.

As long as we "forgave" those "special" questions, I think a FAQ sticky would be tremendous, and lead to more involved questions posted on the forum regarding "special cases."

These special cases could then be amended to the FAQ sticky, and over time we'd build a really comprehensive help list. I'd be willing, for example, to submit an attachment on the tricky files and registry entries related to WordSmith AND POCKET PURCHASE removal from the desktop - a NIGHTMARE - there's a special case if ever there was one!!

Thank you for the reply! I was beginning to think no-one cared: just 3 votes! Such a shame this forum isn't as lively as it once was. :( I was rather hoping that if nothing else, the T5 would help keep this forum alive!

You're absolutely right. People would of course be welcome to post questions regarding the FAQs.. The hope would just be, that the FAQ would answer the question for them. But if they had something to ask that wasn't already answered or wanted something clarifying, they would be more than welcome to post. And even if the question was already answered in the FAQ, we would still forgive them :)

Thanks for the offers of articles. We would of course love your contributions.

Now to everyone who has read this thread and not voted- WHY HAVEN'T YOU VOTED!!! There have been loads of views of this thread, yet only 2 votes except mine! C'mon, lets have a little more enthusiasm please!

Great idea, so another yes. Do not worry about the fourm, because a lot of us read it every day, and have gained the information to fix the many problems that come along. Just a note, has anyone noticed the few programs that say "cobalt" ready. Thanks for a great fourm, Russ.

Unanimous, here also.

Sorry, in the process of selling the house and moving so been in and out of touch lately. If there is any change in the email address, will advise. Also, with the timing, I assumed it had to do with someone and their new T5, but I am all for the idea as presented.
Richard

Could people now please write down questions/subject areas, they feel are asked freqently and should be in the FAQ. I understand it will hopefully be built up over time, but nevertheless we need a few to start of with!
Thanks.

Sorry for not having sorted this still, I seem to have had very little spare time recently.

Anyway I'll unsticky the post now, because I know how annoying pointless stickys are. But please volunteer for any subjects you will be happy to do (volunteer by posting in this thread!). Obviously you'll need to check this thread before going and writing anything, so we don't have duplications.
I'll put the ones in bold that people have volunteered for.

1) Reviews of Tungsten T Models.
2) Comparison Between TT Models. - mhamann
3) Bluetooth Setup/Running.
4) Movies on TTs. - iiicRules
5) Best software for different things.
6) Availability, safety, security & reliability of SD Card Backups
7) Launchers (groan)
8) Outlook conduit "fixing"
9) Phone & SMS connect problems/solutions/options
10) SD CARD SIZE/SPEED comparisons, benchmarks (will change drastically over time, however)
11) WiFi
12) GPS experiences/software
!3) Uses for a dead Palm....
14) Launchers
15) Word Processing etc
16) Web Browsing

It doesn't need to be an essay, just a clear description of the subject (problems, suggestions, software etc), possibly with links to good threads in the forum on the subject, and links to software etc.

For example I'll be doing the movie bit, and will link to threads like "that's it, I'm ready for the movies..." and websites with movie playing Palm software on, as well as describing the process and things involved in putting a movie on a Palm as clearly and briefly (!) as possible.

:)

I abbreviated, with your kind permission, the list to eliminate dupes and group things a little better.:

NEW TO PALM? Some introductory Tips
Reviews & Comparisons Tungsten T Models.

Bluetooth, Wifi and Web Browsing
Best software for different things.
SD Card Ratings, Benchmarks, Backups
Launchers - To Each His Own
Conduit Problems incl Outlook
Movies!!
Phone & SMS connect problems/solutions/options
GPS experiences/software
Word Processing etc
Web Browsing

I wouldn't number them, might or might not alphabetize (might go on priority of inquiries) - and I'm curious, IIIc, just how we "pitch in" if the thing is locked. I'd personally like to add "Got a pair??!! Then do something about your flash!!" but that's probably out, huh?? hehe

To pitch in, just say what you wanna do and go do it! (As long as it relates directly to Tungsten Palm Handhelds, and is a fairly frequently asked question!)
You're right you won't be able to post it yourself, but if you just PM it over to me or Matthew, we'll put it up.

Thanks for your kind offer to the Best Software FAQ Paul :) If you'd like to do another category or three, thats even better :)

Okay, so maybe people would start posting telling us what aspects of the FAQ they will be working on...either do that or PM iiicRules or myself...email works okay also for me.

I'm working on a comparison chart which may have to go on a separate website...not sure that this forum would look kindly on trying to post a table...although an image would work.

iiicRules is working on Movies, as he is THE authority in that field.

So come on the rest of you Palmers. Let's get writing.
