We just bought a 1996 Ford Windstar that we saw advertised on Craigslist. The man said it just needed some E brake work, and something called Flex Fans. We drove two and a half hours to buy this van in the dark from a man we did not know... We only paid $600 for it so we thought we got a good deal. I drove it all the way back home and it drove well.
When we took it to the mechanic to fix the E brake and the flex fans they asked if we wanted them to look it over so we said yes. They called us back and said it needed complete new front and back brakes, e brake cables, lots of exhaust work, cathletic converter, and more. In all about $2100 of work.
Our mechanic, whom is a good guy we have been doing business with for many years tried to order a new catheletic converter from four different parts shops and they all came backwards... to the right when they are supposed to be toward the left. (Or I may have it backwards.) They said that they will put some chemicals through...
They said that they will put some chemicals through the system and see if the check engine light stays off and hopefully we will not need a new catty which for some reason they can only order through the dealership for $1500. They even ran it with the VIN # and they still came backwards... they do not understand why this may be. Will it pass emissions with catty problems?
We do not know what to do... we got sold a lemon...
