Ford Taurus Transmission Bands.?

Can the bands in the transmission of a 94 Ford Taurus GL 3.8 be tightened? Could that be causing transmission to have trouble dropping into gear after it is warmed up?
I've heard that some bands are self tightening. Will the bands on this car be self tightening?
