Thanks for taking the time to read my question...

I have a Ford Taurus 2004 with 43,000 miles on it. Last night, I have difficulty starting the car. When I turn the ignition, there is only a single click, followed by a series of very faint and regular clicks for about 5-10 secs.

This morning, when I went back to where I park the car overnight, the battery is completely dead, there is no electricity at all. Remote lock doesn't work and when i turn ignition, no light at all on the dashboard. There is a Midas within walking distance, I asked them to help me. They agreed to help me push the car to their shop if I agree to pay them to replace the battery if it is a battery problem... fair enough..

They hook up a black box on wheels to my battery. But they are unable to start the car with their charger. There is just a single loud click when the ignition key was turned.. We let the battery charge for a while on their charger. and try again... no good, same problem..

We agreed to replace the battery, since it is already dead. I didn't watch them do it, but according to them after replacing the battery, the car starts immediately.

My question is.... why is it like that? because the guy was stumped too, the car should start when they connect to the charger. is there anything wrong with the starter?

Is there a way for me to check the starter on my own? Is it possible that the starter is defective and is draining so much current that it spoil the battery?

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but my car seems to start more 'roughly' compared to the past, but not distinctively so.
