My Son's 1991 Ranger will not start. When the key is turned all I get is a click. The battery is new and has full charge. I figured it is either the solenoid or the starter. I wanted to rule out the solenoid so I bypassed it by running a jumper cable from the pos. side of the battery to the starter side of the solenoid. Same thing happens, one single click. This makes me pretty sure it is the starter. If I continue to tap the post of the solenoid with the jumper cable (~30-40 times) it will eventually turn over and start (with the key turned on off course), One of my buddy's said it could also be dirty battery connections not delivering all of the batteries power to the solenoid, but by me using the jumper cable, I should have bypassed any bad connection, correct? BTW, I did clean the battery posts and cables so they are clean. Thanks for any suggestions.
Solenoid is on the inside of the fender next to the battery.
