Ford Ranger making clunking noise transfer case?

My 1998 Ford Ranger I just bought a month ago made a really bad clunking noise about 3 days after I bought it. Although, when I moved it to 4WD Low it stopped for a month. Today I was driving home and it did this in 4WD. The noise is a clunking and the car like vibrates really badly. Any ideas if this is the transfer case or what it is? thanks
