Ford mustang mach 1 help?

Okay I need some help, I'm looking at a 71 mach 1 and they want 5800 for it, its in decent shape, but needs work. So I went on ebay motors to see what kind of shape the cars are in and the prices vary from 4000-40000. What are the factors? mileage, condition, is one of the years more desirable then the others?
 
sounds good if there's not much rust, that's a deal killer. Mach I and fastbacks are worth the most. they it's the engine, the bigger the better..
