A mate of mine bought a new Ford Mondeo Estate tdci 2litre in August 2006, to use as a taxi. He's done about 72k miles in it so far, that was until the timing chain failed. He took it to his local dealer who has quoted £1800 to repair it (I assume the failure has damaged the engine? - I know nothing about cars...).
Dealer says that car is out of warranty and there is no inherent problem with timing chain.
Should the timing chain fail so early in a cars life / low mileage ?
What recourse could my mate take in resolving this issue ?
Any advice appreciated.
