ford has their 150, 250, and 350 trucks and chevy and dodge has 1500, 2500 and 3500?

where do they get those numbers from? i know the 150 and 1500 are 1/2 ton trucks, 250 and 2500 are 3/4 ton trucks, and 350 and 3500 are 1 ton trucks but where do they get those numbers from? how does 150 or 1500 stand for 1/2 ton and 350 or 3500 stand for 1 ton?? wtf
