Ford Focus TDI Mk1 Smell Starting Car?

When I start my Ford Focus TDI Mk1 there is a burnt rubber type smell for about 30-60 seconds which disappears for the rest of the journey. If the car is warm there is not usually a smell (on starting), if the car has been left for a few days there usually is a smell and it is stronger. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?
