ford focus speedometer and odometer stopped while driving help?

my speedometer and odometer stopped working while driving and then came back on. They keep doing this randomly and now the check engine ligh went on. Is this electrical or engine issues? Not a fuse I checked. thanks
 
Have it scanned to see if the check engine light codes come up for a "vehicle speed sensor" malfunction. It is a likely culprit, given these symptoms. Consider it an electrical issue, but have it checked out soon!
 
I would check the speed sensor. I dont know where it lives in the Focus, on rear drive vehicles it is on the diff casting. When I have had problems like that, the sensor has died, easy to replace and wasn't expensive
