Which of these would be best for a 21 year old male's first car?

I have a budget of around £5500 for a second hand one and im looking at either a Clio 1.5dci 86 or Focus 1.6tdci 110.

Both cost about the same but the clio would be a 3yr old instead of 4yr old car. This is for ones with about 40k miles.

I want a car with a 5* crash test score, which both these have.
I also wanted good mpg, and these are 64.2 for the clio and 58.9 for the focus.
Both are one of the best cars in their class although the focus is from the class above the clio.
Also i want low insurance, the clio is group 3, focus is group 6.
Size is not that important, both have 5 seats, which is big enough for me.
The Focus is a bit faster, but both are faster than the only 2 previous cars i have driven (a seat leon 1.4 75bhp, and suzuki swift 1.0 52bhp)
Road tax is a little cheaper on the clio too.

For reliability, in the jd power survey both scores were average with the clio on 79.5% (59th) and Focus on 79.9% (51st), with no major complaints for either.

I plan to keep the car for about 4 years.

So basically do you think the Focus is worth the extra cost?

Please dont tell me to get a different car altogether or get a petrol one, i know a petrol one would be cheaper to buy and petrol costs a bit less, but for me, the savings due to lower tax, higher fuel economy and a higher price when i sell it, makes diesel cheaper overall. I also think they're better to drive in a way, due to having more torque, so acceleration at lows revs is better.

If it's your first car I don't think it is going to be worth the extra money. Realistically in about four years both of them would have the same amount of wear on them and I doubt that you will be able to trade/sell the focus for more then you will be able to sell the Clio so there is no reason to dump extra money on it in the first place.
