I have read on some Ford Focus owner's reviews that the water (coolant) pump has failed at low mileages e.g. less than 40 000 miles. I am worried because I own a Ford Focus 1.8 petrol which is a 1999 model and has 74k on the clock.

I found this link which gives some information on how long OEM pumps last :

From your experience how many miles or years do Ford water pumps last for ?

I owned an X reg Focus 1.8 and did 50,000 miles in it, selling it at 64K. I didn't get a spot of trouble from it, apart from the starter motor, where the wires kept coming lose once or twice. I really had 50,000 of trouble free motoring. It probably varies from car to car, each having their own little fault, but I never heard of the Focus in general having a water pump problem. I loved that car!
