Ford Focus 1.8 petrol (UK) water pump question?

I have read on some Ford Focus owner's reviews that the water (coolant) pump has failed at low mileages e.g. less than 40 000 miles. I am worried because I own a Ford Focus 1.8 petrol which is a 1999 model and has 74k on the clock.

From your experience how many miles or years do Ford water pumps last for ?
 
Is it driven off the timing belt?

If not I wouldn't worry about it until the old temp warning light comes on the dash.
