Ford Focus 1.4 CL stalling at idle?

Hello all,

I have a 2000 Focus and when I bring it to a halt at traffic lights with clutch down the engine stalls as the revs drop very low indeed. A common problem, apparently, but also quite embarrassing! I have had a mechanic clean out the idle control valve but the problem isn't resolved. It seems to happen the most when the engine is running at high revs as you you put the clutch down and then bring the car to a halt. I can save it by changing down a gear a bit early but this isn't guaranteed. Applying a bit of throttle when stopped does keep the engine alive though.

Also, the dials also sit at zero for a few seconds after the car has started up. They do all eventually move but it's a bit odd that they sit around not doing anything for 10 seconds!

It has just had new brake pads, tyres, air filter, oil filter etc etc...as part of a service by another garage. But obviously they missed this!!

The mechanic has offered to run a diagnostic scanner which can reprogramme the ECU for £40. If that doesn't work then I know the problem might require having the speed sensor replaced but this would cost about £100.

The focus also needs a new clutch as the old one is worn but it's probably got a few months left in it. Question is: should I get speed sensor and clutch done all at once or should I gamble with the diagnostic programmer and get the clutch sorted later?
