Every morning for the past couple of weeks it has run progressively worse and now it is almost impossible to start. It will run for a second like normal then begin to spit and sputter and smoke and then die. Once I get it started it runs rough for a few minutes and then NO TROUBLE the rest of the day. Even if it sits up for hours, no problems. It is not cold here by the way. Lows at night have been between 50 and 65. I tried a couple of the popular fuel treatments including HEET and STP. Now 2 days later, when I was trying to start it again it simply quit trying to fire or even turn over. The batteries are fine but NO cranking noise at all. Thx for the help.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter???
It sounds like it is starving for fuel as it is running rough. Once the fuel pressure overcomes the restriction it runs fine. Also have the fuel pump pressure checked before the filter and after if possible

If there is no cranking can the starter gone bad, due you run glow plugs on this type of diesel motor. It wont hurt to get advice from your local automotive shop, it works sometimes if you plan to do the repairs yourself

sounds like somethingb is blocked...fuel filter is the first guess

if not that also check the battery terminals the batts may be fine but corrosion kills starting power
