my aunt bought a 2000 ford explorer limited edition v-6 4.0l sohc engine with 122,000 miles on it and about a week later the oil change light came on and she just pushed the reset button and drove a year with out getting the oil changed then finally they changed the oil 20,000 miles later and they drove it another 22,000 miles / a year later with out getting the oil change today as I speak the explorer has 166,000 miles on it with the same engine oil in it since 142,000 miles a year ago the oil is really black too so how is this truck still running with only one oil change and 2 years and 40+ thousand miles or how long will it run.

It will not last long that is very bad for them and all of us mechanics call explorers exploders because the engines go bad often

I would doubt if it would take much more abuse. But this one was obviously built "Ford tough". Maybe the rest of us are just paranoid about maintenance.

i can promise you that engine isnt purring like a kitten, especially if you start it up in the cold. The rod and crank bearings must be screaming from dirt and grime build up. She is literally ripping thousands of miles off the engines life. oil changes these days are 20-30 bucks, so once that engine gives out and starts seriously knocking she'll be paying 12-1300 dollars or more to replace it.

First is it smoking? As long as the oil on the dipstick doesnt smell burn and if its not having trouble cranking up I wouldnt worry to much about it. Try some engine restore by STP.
