ford Escort zx2 vibrates?

I was test driving a car with a friend and it did excellent untill the way back when i shifted up to 3rd at about 35 the car was kinda shaking and vibrateing and the check motor light was flashing everyone i've talked to claims it just has really old gas in it but im looking for a 2nd opinion
