ford escort td coil light came on, heard a ticking noise now car wont start?

i have a t reg 1999 ford escort 1.8 td, i was driving home yesterday when the coil ignition light came on.. i managed to get home and my brother looked under the bonnet where he said he thought a ticking noise we could hear was coming from the battery but today the car wont start and the coil light isnt coming on at all. can you give me an idea of what could be wrong and if its very costly to repair? many thanks danielle
 
If you mean the light for the heater plugs that comes on before you start it then it's probably the heater plug relay or it's controller box at fault. If you mean the charge lamp then that would be the alternator. I suspect that you mean the first suggestion of mine. In that case it's also probably flattened your battery so you should disconnect it and put it on charge before it's destroyed.
