While driving my 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 today, I went to shift into third at around 3,800 rpms while climbing a hill. When I did it made a grind, i then proceeded to try once more and it still did it, So I just went to fourth. Then It appears it may be stuck in that gear. I went to stop to figure out what happened, and when i put it in neutral and let out the clutch, it stalled as if still in gear. It also doesn't allow me to place it in 1st, 2nd, 5th, or reverse. Only 3rd and 4th gear positions, but no matter where the shifter is positioned it will always be in 4th gear now. However the clutch pedal itself still feels fine, and still releases the transmission as normal, and while in 4th driving, it still seems to drive normal. No noises or anything from tranny. Ive not had any problems with my car until today. And I always drive stick very well. I am a mechanic, but not with transmissions. Any help is greatly appreciated.
The linkage appears to be intake and working fine. Im am occasionally able to get it into other gear positions (keyword positions not gears itself) reverse light will turn on still in reverse. When in these other positions it will still be in gear, but not 4th, and the car will go nowhere no matter what. Only 3rd and 4th gear positions will actually allow the car to move. Even in the neutral position car still seems to be stuck in gear, but will not move.
