Ford E350 Transmission Overheating?

When I am driving my Ford E350 down the road or highway, a fan in the engine (maybe radiator) will turn on, making a loub grumbly noise. It will turn on and off every 10 or so minuites. This leads me to believe that the transmission is overheating and a fan is being turned on to cool it. Is this the problem? What can I do about it?

when you assume you make a a$$ of U and me
1 check level/quality of coolant
2 check fan relay
3 tranny got fluid? full/clean
4 tranny is last thing id think of causing fan to go on/off...most do that...[both my cars do]
