Ford 9" rear differential>?

I would like swap out the brake backing plates from my 9" Ford rear-end to a newer style that has wider shoes, ( my current set up is 2" shoes) like 2 1/2 or so. Does anyone know if this can be done?? What year truck should I look for ?? The rear end is the LARGER 9" pumpkin...It came out of a 60's Ford pickup..
