There is no such thing as a "pulling gear". Your mechanic is ripping you off. The "shut off" problem you are having is caused by two sensors. 1) Cam-Crank sensor, and 2) Crankshaft Timing sensor. Each sensor will cost about $50 to $75 and the labor should be about $100 to install.
That's it. Thats all you need to do, and the car will be fine.

usually when I'm about? to stop or slowing down). I have had spark plugs changed, timing belt, fuel pump changed, fuses changed and recently something by the name of "pulling gear" ( all done in a year). Usually the car would shut down, but the lights and radio would still be on, so the car would have some power... Itjust won't drive. If I turn the car off, it will immediatly turn back on and I can continue driving. Two weeks ago, the car shut off and to my dismay... the car did not turn on... I had to get it towed... My mechanic ruled out the alternator and mentioned this "pulling gear" problem. On my way home tonight, about to pull in the parking space... The car shut off once again. I turned it off, and it started back again with no problem. At the moment, I can't afford to purchase a new car... because I would in a FLASH! I feel like Im spending so much. If I can diagnose this Shutting off situation, I should be okay.... Any suggestions???
