For my birthday coming up i'd like to ask for some sort of gaming system.. help me

decide which one please I have a ps2 right now and theres all this new stuff out there so i'd like to get more modern. Since my birthdays coming up i can take advantage of this opportunity. Should i ask for a playstation 3 or a x box? For Xbox are the controllers similar to that of a ps2 controller because i'm not sure if i'd be able to work them. Also lead me to a site where i can get a list of new games for the system you've recommended me so i have a starters game to ask along with it.
