I just have begun looking to find new animes to watch outside of Naruto and i found a list of the top 50 animes for the decade and FLCL was #1. Being #1 I figured that would be a good one to watch however I dunno if its just that im a newb to anime or if people are completely out of their minds but i found this to be a big piece of garbage ive ever seen. Most of the time i have no idea whats really going on besides the last like 5 minutes when they kill whatever robot pops out of his head. If someone could explain to me why this anime is considered the greatest thing ever id greatly appreciate it because i dont see the genius behind it. sorry if i offended any fans of the show lol.

I'm not sure why it got the top spot, it's good but not great.

As for the reasons why it came out on top, here are several.

Visuals: Visusally FLCL is a treat. From character design to the incredibly smooth animation the creators of the show took a great care to make something with impact. There are several scenes, such as Canti's flight that are breath taking.

Soundtrack: The Pillows own, and their music fits incredibly well with the series.

Story: At its core, FLCL is a comming of age story. It's pretty simple to follow if you can ignore some of the absurdist humour.

Commedy: FLCL is all about surreal humour. You have to have a very special apreciation of that kind of humour to really enjoy the show. There are dozens of brilliant moments such as destruction of the fourth wall, parody, etc.

Overall it's a pretty complete package. I find it somewhat interesting that you call the worst garbage you've ever seen, because Naruto is definetly one of the worst shows in the past several decades.

Ok thanks.

Visuals: since im watching it on some website the definition is pretty poor so i guess im missing the detail that u get to see from a dvd version.

Soundtrack: I dont know who the pillows are but i didnt really feel the music.

Story/humor: I can tell its a coming of age story but i guess its that i dont get the humor and it just seems absurd to me. I have laughed a couple of times (such as the southpark reference) but i think ill need someone to sit down with me and explain why some stuff is considered funny lol.

As for the naruto thing Ive heard so many people say that but I dont get why. Outside of the fillers and the fact that itll take 20 episodes to get through an arc i have found it incredibly addicting and emotional. And now the show is getting into some philosophical types of stuff. Im wondering if the people that dont like it havent watched it in its entirety.

People who hate on Naruto, do it because it's the popular thing to do. That or they're One Piece fans(which I don't think is a very good anime).

prolly true but anyways if anyone can give me an explanation of what exactly is funny in the show id be willing to give it a second watch and try to understand the genius behind it lol

That's not always true. I'm a One Piece fan and I like Naruto. Or maybe I'm just a minority around here.

If you ask me, if we have to explain why the jokes are funny then they're not funny. For you anyway, we all have different taste in comedy. Not everyone I've shown it to has thought it was funny so don't worry about it if you don't find the comedy to your liking.

I never thought FLCL was that funny. Although I was lost following the story too, I just found it to be a very charming, quirky, entertaining, and a visually appealing show. It's not the greatest anime of all time and definitely shouldn't be #1 on any list, but it was pretty good.

Naruto is incredibly mediocre, the plotline after the initial timeskip has felt incredibly phoned in and shoddily thought out considering the amount of focus we've had on Sasuke and how many absurd power-ups he's had in addition to the fact that he's been pretty useless in any fight he's actually been involved in. I mean seriously, it's basically been "sasuke gets a really absurd deus ex machina eyehax ability or some ridiculous power from restraining orichimaru inside himself and still manages to **** up against whoever he was fighting or at best forcing them to use their final attack which should've obliterated the obnoxious little **** except oh hey more bullshit moves introduced to explain away him winning."

The parts focused on Naruto haven't been much better. I mean how long did he spent with Jaraiya to essentially learn nothing useful whatsoever? Whoo, he got the rasengan except in like three years he hadn't figured out how to add elemental voodoo to it which he successfully did within a week of training with Kakashi. Then he suddenly learns the sage techniques from the frogs which again for as ridiculous of a power up as it was seems like he should've managed way back when except Kishimoto didn't realize he wrote himself into a ****ing corner until the past hundred or so chapters. The villains, while mostly pretty cool, have come across as horribly inept considering they're supposedly on par with Jinchuriki but losing to teenage ninjas with little real battle experience. I mean at least any of them Shikamaru took out I can sort of understand, since he's actually a well-thought out character who does ninja-y things. But really, any of the others losing to Team 7 is just shameful.

Pretty much the only parts of Naruto that have been at all interesting were any of them not involving the title character or Sasuke.

As for FLCL, typical Gainax show; looks real pretty but the plot and characters are lacking. I really couldn't recommend it, not in 2010. Go drop some money on a 'The Pillows' album instead and call it a day.

ok lol guess it was just a bad ranking system that over hyped the show. just wanted to make sure i wasnt oblivious to some underlying mind blowing thing. as for naruto for the people that dislike it/find flaws is there an anime that is similar to naruto in being ninja based where the characters have unique abilities that advance throughout time but is done better that i should watch?

I thought FLCL was great although it certainly isn't for everyone. Volk summed up its strong points very well so I'll give my take on them.

What FLCL boils down to is a surreal sensory bombardment wrapped around a simple yet well executed coming of age story. It's probably the closest anime I have seen to what I would call "art house". It excels in weirdness and has a very unique mood created by its unique animation and soundtrack.

The story does an amazing job of capturing the experience and mentality of a teenage boy. Most anime focus on this demographic, but very few manage to dive as deep into its psyche.

If you watch FLCL expecting things to be explained to you in a straightforward manner then you will be disappointed. If on the other hand, you're able to decipher some of the symbolism and psychology laden throughout the anime then you'll gather a solid appreciation for it. Or, if you want to turn your brain off for a couple of hours you can still enjoy it since it looks cool and sounds good. Like I said, it's the closest I've seen to an art house anime.

I've found History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi to be pretty funny. I mean the main character is pretty much tortured through the whole series, learns to fight fate in the hardest way, and his training sort of pays off. Though he is pretty talentless (Kenichi that is). If you wanna try old? Could take a whack at Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. Too many people are making a big deal out of Highschool of the Dead. I mean I've been reading the series for some time (especially before it started getting big recognition). You could try some Gundam series, though I myself have gotten bored of anime. ~_~ I prefer my meat and potatoes, some good ol' Dragonball or Yu Yu Hakusho.

I found GTO to be pretty good overall. The story starts getting srsbsnss at some point, but still keeps to it's kookyness. If you want, take a crack at Goldenboy, it's short, but funny as hell.
