Flashing monitor??? Why?

My computer screen has become REALLY dodgy and I'm wondering how serious it is/could become, and what the causes are. Basically, I got a laptop in August, and the problem started pretty soon after I got it. IT doesn't happen all the time, but every now and again the screen will just start flashing and flickering and becoming black or negative. It usually stops if I restart the laptop, but recently it has been becoming more persistent. It is an Acer Aspire 5920 if that helps? Any help would be appreciated, but please don't just say "seek the help of a proffensional" or anything along those lines, because obviously I will, but in the mean time I was wondering if anybody has any information. Is it a common problem or just me??
Thanks x
The laptop is under warranty, would this cover it?

Well sounds like there is a short in the connection somewhere or worse the screen could be dieing... if the screen is dieing then you are S.O.L.
if the screen burns out it can be replace but is normally very costly. would be cheaper to plug a screen in the port on the back of it if it allows a VGA connection.

as for a other problems he drivers could need updating but on a laptop its probably the screen dieing
