Flashing LED Circuit?

I'm kind of new to the whole DIY electronics things, and I wanted to try something as one of my first serious projects. It was a circuit with an LED that, when a switch is turned, blinks faster and faster, and after a certain amount of time, opens a relay to do something, than turns off. Any ideas?

that is actually quiet easy to do, soldering the hard part. search around on the internet and yahoo search, you'll find many pics and plans to build the basic projects most people start of with. many videos also available around internet.

The one way to get around this without resorting to microcontrollers, is to have a series of capacitors with decreasing capacitance. The capacitor will first charge, and then discharge to to activate the transistor, and also charge the second capacitor. I can't help thinking that this would continue indefinitely, unless the last relay will shut down the power source. Do share if you have figured out the schematics.
