Flash CS4 AS3 Instance Name Confusion?

Okay, so I know that an instance name and a symbol name are different, but I cannot find the place to change the instance name so I can code it. I have searched the web for hours and cannot find anyone helpful.

If you have not figured out yet I am a COMPLETE novice at this whole thing. Use small(ish) words...please.
