I have a 95 Jetta that has a few problems. Hard starts, i.e. engine tries to stall when i start it, no emergency brake, no exhaust, power steering doesn't work, etc.

With my rebate check, i have 2 options.

Either fix my car or buy a used 2001 Kia sedan from a local small dealership for $1100 that has about the same number of miles as my car but is obviously being sold by a dealer so i doubt it has major issues.

I use my car for a 5 mile roundtrip commute to/from work a day. Thats it.

What do you guys think ?

Get the Kia and treat yourself.
The 1995 car is getting on a bit now. I swapped a 94 for an 01 and loved all the extra kit.

Go ahead and trade up 6 years. But make sure the dealer has some kind of warranty on it (sometimes they don't).

You might also get an independent mechanic to look at it before you sign the deal.
Just because it's from a dealership doesn't mean it's in A1 shape.

GET RID OF THE JETTA

The Jettas have a horrible service history as your experience can attest to. If you have all these problems already then just kiss it goodbye.

If your only two choices are these two cars then I would definitely get the 2001 Kia.

The Jetta has no warranty that is why you have all those repair costs pending.

The Kia on the other hand has a 10 year, 100,000 mile power train warranty (from the original in service date)

Don't presume however that the Kia is the perfect car just because you are buying it from a dealer.
Ask for a carfax report and try to get a mechanical inspection before you purchase the car. (It will cost you around $75-$100 more but will be well worth it)
