fishing: what causes backlash on casting reels?

what causes backlash on casting reels? is there a setting i can work with? do i need to use heavier lures? weights? Lighter/heaveir line?
i have an abu garcia ambassador red from walmart, using 20 pound test line...it was like, $100 bux.
 
Go to your local bait shop and ask them to show you how to set your reel up . you must have a rod to match you reel and must reset for different baits .
