Fishing problem fishes dont get caught on the hook.?

I never caught a fish in my life and i dont think i will. When i got fishing i use dough as bait, my friend says hes caught millions with dough. So ok i tried dough one day and guess what, i fed the fish instead of catching them, how embarrassing. And its tiny fish that im fishing. They always nibble the food on the hook. I tried everything after that as bait. Worms, bread EVEN TOMATOS. Please can anyone help
