as for the elephant fish there are more than one fish with the some name so you will have to find out whitch one you are wanting .
and what kind of smaller fish are you talking about?

I would have to agree with I think the second answer. Bala Sharks are a schooling fish which means at least three, however With Bala's I would go with at least 6 fish. Elephants, as stated, get as large as your sharks so a tank of 200 Gallons or more would be the best thing. The Bioload on a tank with that many fish of that size could become a problem if you are not careful so please do your research and select a filter that also is a little above the needed requirements.
Good luck

Bala sharks are schooling fish so they need groups of 6+. They also grow to 12 inches each. A school of bala sharks should have minimum 150 gallons.

Elephant fish grow to 12 inches I think. Regardless, you need a tank over 150 gallons, and with one that size, why would you want small fish?

Balas can be kept with small fish, but the fish needs to be larger than their mouth.

well idealy you should have a huge tank to house the both of them and you should have correct numbers of each fish(school for bala shark and etc.)

You dont have to school them although it may cause stress on the fish

and i say as long as the fish is at least 4-5 inches you should be okay although elephant noses can be aggressive at times.

yes you can keep both fish in the same tank but you will need a good size tank to house them about 150 gallons
