My decision was based on my water quality. I happen to have acidic water so I chose to stock my twenty gallon with South American fish:
2 German rams
6 marbled hatchetfish
4 corydoras
A twenty gallon can only hold a single fancy goldfish anyway, so going with tropical is more exciting.
