First time shooting outdoor scenes for photo class?

I just got an assignment in my class to shoot outdoor scenes. Unfortunately, my teacher has been sick and communicated this to us via word document. I am not really sure how to go about doing this or what kind of things to shoot and how to shoot them, etc., etc. This is my first photomedia class and I'm using a point and shoot digital camera. Any tips? And what kind of things am I supposed to take pictures of? I live in downtown Chicago if that makes any difference. . .
