Basically I'm out of shape, gained about 40 pounds.

Was hilly where I was riding. It was also very cold, so my lungs kind of hurt from breathing in so much cold air but after like 10 minutes of catching my breath I feel better.

Rode for about 40 minutes, this is normal right?
Also, It is a BMX bike meant for off roads, and I'm 16.

since you are out of shape, the only way to get back in shape is to keep going....no pain no gain! here is something that will help keep your head warm and your lungs warmer so you don't catch pneumonia:http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=24742&subcategory_ID=1343 and NO a bmx bike is not your best choice for off road cycling but if it is all you have then it will work for now , you're young and resilient.

basic mistakes. you can't expect to just jump on and ride like you use to. and in cold that's good for your lungs. the smart thing would be to work into it. otherwise you could end up injured then no riding. use the globe above your shoulder, it's not just a hat rack
