Hi. I am a 57-year-old male who just had an ultrasound and it showed an 8mm polyp on my gall bladder. I have no pain, no symptoms of anything, no lymph involvement (according to the GI doc).

I am seeing a surgeon this week, as the GI doc suggests removal. He says that there is "no evidence to suggest cancer on the ultrasound," he certainly hedges his bets by saying, "let's see what's going on."

Though I am not afraid of getting the gall bladder out, I am afraid of cancer. Anyone have anything they can tell me that will help me minimize my worry, as I cannot sleep?

Many thanks from this first-time poster.

Gallbladder cancer is very rare. I seriously doubt with no pain and no symptoms (so why did you have the ultrasound???) that there is anything untoward going on.

Many thanks for responding. Even though I have a family and kids and co-workers, it's also comforting to hear from the Heath Boards. The reason I had the ultrasound is that a polyp showed up about 10 years ago, but the doc said don't worry about it. After a couple of moves and new jobs, etc., I now have a new doc and he said "let's do a follow-up." Because the old records cannot be found, there is no way to know if the polyp has grown. It's comforting to get the opinion that without any other symptoms (liver, lymph, pain, etc.) there is little chance of cancer.

Trust me, even though there are no guarantees, your words did make me feel better. Thank you.
