First Car ? Honda Civic Or VW Jetta ?

The honda civic was the car that i was looking at along with the VW Jetta. Looking in the range on Civic 2001- 2005 & Jetta - 1999- Now. My parents only want to spend under $ 5,500 I am 16
Which one is better out of the 2 ?
MPG ?
Overall ?
Any other suggestions ?
 
To my knowledge, VW's depreciate in value more quickly than Hondas (do). VW's = prettier packaging, Hondas= better quality
 
deff. the civic much more reliable than vw. and pick a good trim on the civic it does have little luxuries.
