First car for a teenager?

My wife and I are looking to buy our son a car for when he goes off to college in the fall. Which seems more appropriate for an 18 year old - '06 Jeep Grand Cherokee or an '06 VW Passat? I really have no preference either way, those are just what my son currently has his eye on.
