My parents got me a 1998 honda civic.. thing is it has 212,000 miles on it. They said it looks fine, but it uses alot of oil or something. Im scared to drive it now. What do you think, way too many miles on it, even for a honda??

miliage is not your problem...its the oil problem that you gotta look at...if its needing oil to add to it all the time then dont get and look for another...or get it and swap in a new used jdm motor that would only have about 35-45 thousand mailes on it.

Most any other car 212K would be a non-starter, with Honda's you can still get some decent run out of them at that point.

If you're worried about it, take it to someone and have them give it the once over.

Most places won't charge more than $100, if that, to do a pretty significant inspection

here is the main point to your question...your parents got it for you. take the free car. do a complete tune up on her (you know, filters plugs and liquids) and it'll be fine. civics are very reliable and have great gas mileage. plus if you are into making tuners the civic is a very easy car to work on and upgrade.

Miles are 100% pointless. But judging from every other question on YA about miles, it seems like no one has any common sense.

Put it this way.

At 50 years old, are you healthy, or not?

You'd say it depends on the person and their lifestyle, right?

Same with a car. Is it 210,000 miles of immaculate care and maintenance?

Or is it 210,000 miles of driving it into the ground?

The miles themselves don't matter at all. It's how it got those miles, that matters.

I have two cars with 300k miles on them, and they run better than my dad's car that has 55,000 miles on it. Because he's an idiot, and doesn't service his car regularly.

So, ignore the mileage. Ask for service records. If they can provide those, you're fine.

i'm just about to learn to drive in like 2 weeks, and i can't say i would want to drive a car with 212000 miles on it.

the up side on it though is its a honda and they are very reliable, i cant see your parents buying you a car thats unsafe.

hope you come to a decision (:
