I have a different foam mattress and it is truely the best thing I have ever done for myself. My co worker told me that he had gotten the temperpedic and it was worth the money that he paid and that I should get one. I saw the generic version for 400.00 and had a 30 day refundable period, so I figured that I would give it a try and if it wasn't any help, I would return it and ask for help to get the Temperpeadic one. I have not returned my original one, I love it so much. It is the best thing my back has ever slept on and I can actually sleep through most nights. I use to think I woke up throughout the night because of the pain, well I guess I was, but I never thought about maybe it was the bed creating the pain. I have learned that it was and now I can sleep through at least 6 hrs. every night. But I agree, which ever way you do it, the memory foam matress does make a difference.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

It's time to buy a new one, mines getting saggy and that can not be helping with my back pain:(
I have three herniated discs L3-4, L4-5, and L5-S1.
When I sleep on a firm mattress at a hotel, I have found that by lirabs will sometimes fall asleep:(
But is a soft one (not pillow top) OK?
What do most of you find that you prefer?
Thank you!!!!

I bought the Temperpedic about 5 years ago now, it was expensive, but by far the best money I have spent on myself. The mattress is great with back pain and bacl problems, I've lived with chronic pain for seven years and the Temperpedic has definately helped my pain and I sleep a little better now. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever laid on, I tried the Sleep Nuraber and would not recommend it at all, it felt like a hammock with no support...

I had wondered about this too; am I sleeping on the correct amount of support for my back. If I stay in bed for too many hours straight, (7 or more hours) I am in horrid pain when I get up, my lower back will be hurting so bad I can't hardly move.

Karon--

I don't know which one would be best for you, but I understand your perdictament. I too can only sleep a max of 7 hrs. and often it is closer to 6 hrs. But the difference I noticed when I got my foam mattress, prior to getting it, I was waking up every 1-1 1/2 hrs. to switch positions, due to the pain I was in. Now I sleep 6-7 hrs. right through. So I was wondering if the matress that you have now, if your sleep prior to it was worse, better or the same. The other good thing is, many of the mattresses have a 30 day return policy. So, if you think your sleep is worse now or that it could get better...you might want to try another type and not get rid of this one...until you know for sure that you found something better.

I discovered that an extra firm mattress was great for my back pain. I need a nice soft mattress topper, however, to prevent the hip pain that the hard mattress causes. The two put together work pretty good. Before I tried this, the back and/or hip pain would either wake me up or follow me into my dreams.

i have the Sleep nuraber bed (select Comfort). its the best out there as far as i am concerned. If you need something soft you can make it softer, if you need something harder you can do that also.

At one point, I actually had four different mattresses, and I would be constantly shifting them back and forth. I now have just one, the mattress that Mamasan2007 has (Serta Plush Top, with it's built in foam topping,) and I'm quite happy with it. The dense foam topping is very soft, and you still have the feel of a conventional mattress. The one thing I don't like about it is that you can't flip it and use the other side, as only one side can be used for sleeping. I guess I'm just used to always moving a mattress about...

I prefer soft. While firm is always suggested for back problems, I had the same problem of lirabs falling asleep or just waking up with several sore joints. The only down side to getting too soft of a bed is rolling over, I've popped out joints before - had to pop my hip back into place the other night from that. For some that might make their back pop, too, and they might not be supported very well.

Funny that you mention this; if I begin to hurt very badly in my sleep, I will dream about it; in my dream I will be hurting really bad oftentimes crying and then when I wake up I am in terrible pain and I am crying.

Do other people here do this, dream about your pain or wake up crying from the pain??

We have the memory foam bed, I gave a lot for it when I bought it 8 years ago; I paid right at a grand for the mattress and spring thingie. Is this the right kind of mattress I need for my back and why do I hurt so bad when I get up??

Hi Mamasan, I'm erabarrassed to say this, but I didn't realize you couldn't turn it over until I went to do so. I find I have to rotate it every once and a while, because it seems to stay compressed after about a month or so if I don't. Other than that, it's a great mattress.

Sunset, I was very surprised that most mattresses today, you don't flip over!
I'm sure they won't last as long, but what can we do?
I do love this mattress, very soft and cushy, but firm underneath.

Thanks for the heaRAB up- Sunset!
I just got mine, and I will make sure and rotate:)

I too am on the hunt. I prefer softer myself. The docs will tell you to get the temperpedic (sp) or semifirm mattress. We recently went mattress shopping and I like one by Simmons, it is semifirm but has a great cushion to it that made in comfy-in the store. The experts tell you to find a company that will let you test drive it for 30 days at home. Also, negotiate the price. I never knew you could do this but these guys work for commission so they aren't really there to help you, they will just keep moving you up the line hoping you will choose a more expensive one. Also, if you write down the tag name, it will be different in every store so you won't find the same one. We googled selecting a mattress or something like that and couldn't believe some of the things we read.

Good luck!

Thank you all!
I ended up with a Serta Plush top (non pillow top) it has memory foam on the top, but lots of coil support underneath.
I really like it:)
