Firewall for Palm TX?

I just purchased a Palm TX and I'm a little paranoid about people being able to access the personal information on my Palm in a public wi-fi hotspot if I'm using the web browser or sending and receiving e-mails. Do I also need a firewall on my Palm if I already have Symantec Antivirus for Handhelds installed? If so, what are some firewall vendors for Palms? I can't seem to find any on the web.

You won't find a Palm OS firewall because it doesn't exist, as far as I can tell. Further, there's little or no need for it... yet. Unlike your typical desktop PC running Windows, Palm doesn't have any services open to the outside world. Save for ICMP, the protocol used by PING for connectivity testing purposes, there's nothing much for a would-be hacker to exploit with, except maybe for the craftiest ones.

The problem may lie with the fact that sending emails over webmails may be "sniffed" or captured by a hacker if it's unsecure or have a weak or non-existent encryption. If you have company email, use that instead via a VPN connection to your office. VPNs have inherent security built-in to make your transactions private.

HTH.

Hi palmtxuser_nyc, and welcome to the board.

Regarding a firewall, the TX does not run any "servers" such as file sharing so there is nothing to attack.

Also, I wanted to write you to tell you about the Palm, Inc. TX resource tool. This tool can help answer your questions that you might have regarding your device. Just click on the link and type in your issue, a list of solutions will appear:

http://www.palm.com/us/support/tx/

And, don?t forget to register your TX:

https://www.onlineregister.com/palm/reg/cgi/index.cgi?LANG=EN&CTRY=United States

I hope these links help.

Hello Heather,

I would just like to take a moment and say THANKS!

You are like tech support the Palm user does not even realize they have. It is nice to know that someone from the Corporate world cares enough to check a forum.

Thanks,
John
