Fires

There have been quite a few wild fires from lightning storms in and around my town (I live in the High Desert area of Southern California). A couple have been small and out of the way, but some have been massive and burned down homes and wildlife. Firefighters have been pulling double and triple shifts just because there seems to be too much fire and not enough manpower at times.

My best friend's cousin just lost everything she couldn't fit in her car when she evacuated. There has been one human death reported, but that man was an idiot for not leaving when he was told to. It's still sad.

Families are living in shelters at the high school. I've been doing volunteer work getting water and food out to those who need it. So many people feel helpless. Fucking sucks big time.

yeah i was in california one year for the fires. That junk was crazy!! That really does suck about all the misfortune, but im sure its too be expected. I would try to take precautions... like having a gravel yard or something equally as retarded.

Yes, I know it is to be expected, and it's one of those "Don't park your trailer in tornado valley if you don't want your shit blown away" situations, but honestly, I wish we had more man power. So many asshats are just outright ignoring the situation until the flames lick at their doorstep!

Anyway, there isn't much we CAN do. We are surrounded by a national park filled with desert (see: DRY) plantlife, so it's not like we can remove it... Property levels are probably going to drop too, which is really crappy news for people who have been investing over the years.

That's so sad. There are wildfires in the Boundry Water Canoe Area up near the Minnesota/Canada border. They're having many of the same problems with that fire as they are with the fires in Souther Cali. I think it's great that you're helping any way you can.

This is bad. I cringe every year when the fires start.

Your life is more important than stuff. Grab things like pictures that can't be replaced. That was a lesson that many learned in the south last year. They evacuated but didn't think to take pictures.

I've been scanning my favorites and saving to disc. Easier to grab a small package of discs than a stack of albums.

I wouldn't want to leave my books and movies either, but there wouldn't be room and they would be covered by insurance.

It would be hard, I've lived here in this house for 26 years. But, pictures and pets and clothes would be the most important. Oh, important papers too. Then any thing that I really wanted to save that would fit.

These are things that people should think about but don't. I did after I saw the devestation of Katrina last year.

Good for you, volunteering and helping out. Maybe ask people if they want to help while you are helping them. Some will be tired of doing nothing but waiting I'm sure.

Good luck, I hope your house and family are safe, always.
