Fire belly newt/toad tank substrate? Bark, Garden Gravel?

I'm 16 and have fire belly newts and toads, I know they shouldn't be kept together but they are doing fine have for ages! So I have just been given a new 3ft tank and want to put them in it, I wondered:

Could I use normal garden pebbles/gravel?
Could I use bark that you buy from garden centres? Or would it tan the water?
