Financial Aid as an Independent?

I'm going to graduate at the end of the upcoming spring semester with a bachelors in history. I'm going to the University of Illinois Chicago for a masters in urban planning and development. UIC is very expensive, especially housing. I'll be 23 when I graduate with my bachelors and 23 when I fill out my FASFA next spring for the following fall. While getting my bachelors, I received no financial aid - except for Stafford student loans. If I wait a year until I am 24 ( and can claim independent on my FASFA) to go to grad school, will I receive alot more financial aid? Will I receive aid that does not have to be repaid?
Thanks for your responses. I'll look into the assistanceships. I wasn't aware that earning a bachelors made me financially independent, but I must admit I thought it was odd that earning a bachelors didn't make me independent.
