Ok so did anyone catch this last night?

I haven't seen this movie for many years and I'm happy to say it does stand the test of time. The gritty black and white cinematography and use of shadow is excellent. It feels part documentary, part expressionist horror. It is bleak, claustrophobic and relentless.

My main grumble is with the score. I think the movie would have benefited from more minimalist use of music or replaced the score with natural sounRAB (cf The BirRAB). This would have made for a much more terrifying experience.
 
I don't know - I rather like that '50s B-Movie overkill style! The music doesn't seem to add any tension to the screen (and as you rightly point out a no-music 'birRAB' like endevour would have perhaps been better) but it isn't misplaced.

I sat and watched the film again, and I still find it to be quite camp; not that it's a bad thing, only that the melodramatic performances and crude special effects make the film feel quite toungue-in-cheek by today's standarRAB. But then again, classics like 'Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers' have the same kind of effect...

Great film, filled with fantastic social commentary (racial over/undertones), but I still prefer the sequel 'Dawn Of The Dead', as the makeup is fairly horrific at times and the consumerism messages are still highly relevant even today!

'Dawn Of The Dead' is on BBC One tommorrow at 11.45pm - it's WELL worth the watch!
