Filling up my Harley Davidson?

I was riding today and started to run out of gas, its a new bike to me so im not quite sure on the mileage yet, so i started getting low i guess.

i ride a 91 flstc and the tank has a gas hole on each side

my question is, do i need to fill both sides up? or just use one and the both holes are there for my convenience?

Fill both sides. They are connected by a small hose, so if you only fill up one side, you only have half a tank.
 
I have a 99 softail, and its the only thing i don't like about the bike. You have to fill both sides. The tube in the bottom doesn't flow fast enough for you to only have to fill one side. On later models, and on the dynas, the left one was sealed shut and had a gas gauge, but not on your bike I'm afraid...
