Fever, abdominal pains and high white blood count while pregnant. How serious is this?

Wife is 6 months pregnant and started feeling sick 4 days ago. She has been running fever and having bad abdominal pains on her right side. Flu tests came back negative but white blood cell count was really high. She has been admitted into the hospital but the doctors haven't been able to find out what is causing it. Ultrasound is hard to tell if it is the appendix. How serious can this be and what damage can this be doing the baby
